Hello.
I have a problem where my computer randomly hangs. I say random in that I can never determine when it is going to happen, but it is 'triggered' somehow, either through clicking on a link, opening a window, or during emerge - both in and out of a WM (though more often when using a WM).
I have run memtest86+ which reported no memory errors, and I have run badblocks with no bad disk segments.
I am completely at a loss as to what is causing this - I think it is something in the kernel that I may have missed or isn't compatible. I'm running gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r8.

With the wonderful help of deuce4570 on #gentoo, he pointed out that I was using discontiguous memory allocation with NUMA - I am now using flat memory allocation without NUMA. (The discontiguous option was default when I first ran menuconfig - seems odd).
Also, I have changed the processor family from Intel P4 to Intel Core 2, which is the correct family. That was my mistake.
The changes seem to have made the system more stable, but it's still not completely perfect - it is just longer between the hangs. (Just as I was about to declare the changes suggested by deuce4570 to be a success, too! Sod's Law).
The new kernel config is here. I have altered some packages, which are listed here.
Lastly, after tidying up my overlays, this is what my emerge --info looks like now.

Same problem here!
All that I could figure out until now: I have about 30 Gentoo Servers running. Only servers hanging have both samba (configured to be a Domain Member Server in an AD) running. All the other servers don't show this behaviour.
Any help really appreciated. |
