Can anyone give some advice on the best mediaplayer if my interests are

1) most stable under Gentoo Linux
2) has support for most codecs
3) integrates nicely with Firefox in the first place and possibly with Konqueror

I've always been very happy with Mplayer. There's also a Mozilla/Firefox plugin available in Portage
so that's what I'd use...

Another vote for mplayer here. Use mplayerplug-in with Firefox and kmplayer with Konqueror.

I would try smplayer. It uses mplayer engine but it has a far superioro gui (imho) and is suited for kde. I don't know how about konqueror integration though, but it may be worth trying..

If you want a gui, I agree with the recommendation for SMPlayer. Simply the best frontend for mplayer there is. Available of course in berkano overlay.

yngwin,

I searched the web abd found berkano and bens overlays.
But I am uncertain how to proceed with "own" e-builds.
How will e.g. emerge -u world work with your own e-builds?

See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-508174.html and http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds (when that is back up). Yes, emerge -u world will work with that.

I was (and still am) a big MPlayer fan myself, and never heard of SMPlayer before. I tried KMPlayer before, but it didn't add any value to GMplayer so I kinda ditched it. Well, after hearing about SMPlayer, I thought I'd give it a try, especially since it is based on Qt4 and I use KDE 4. One word: WOW! First of all, I really love the Media Player Classic look, help screens in the configuration dialog (no need to 'man mplayer'), and stability! Using KDE 4 with compositing on, if I started MPlayer or GMPlayer with the xv output driver it crashed X. Strangely not the case with SMPlayer. I currently use the x11 driver. GMPlayer/MPlayer would not resize the video with this output driver (on full screen it just centered the video on the screen using it's normal size), with SMPlayer this works as well. I suppose it would work with plain MPlayer as well, with some options, but I thought is was a driver limitation and didn't even look.

Anyway, kudos to the SMPlayer development team! It's my new video player of choice.

And now it is available in portage!

I prefer/use gecko-mediaplayer (a plugin for Firefox and Opera); and gnome-mplayer, a gui frontend for mplayer. Don't be turned off by the name 'gnome' -- the gnome-mplayer only requires gconf. These packages (gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer) are written by the same person who wrote mplayerplug-in

Mplayer meets all this conditions, and in which regard codecs support it is exceptional. It can play almost anything, even broken or incomplete files and even flash video files. It can't handle drm encripted crap, though, and I am very happy about that. 8)

For music, amarok is very good, though it's not precisely lightweight, and I don't know if there's any kind of plugin for firefox. It integrates seamlessly with konqueror. I also like kaffeine for videos, it is very complete, and certainly, the xine backend is much more suitable than mplayer for dvds. It can also almost anything.

Gxine far surpasses mplayer IMHO. Mplayer requires so much more to compile, and in my experience, is nowhere near as stable as gxine.

Also, in my experience, playing a DVD with Mplayer is a frustrating event. Whereas when I play one under gxine, all I have to do is click File->DVD, and the DVD starts to play. With Mplayer, I'd do the same thing, then I'd have to mess with it to get beyond the DVD's menu to actually play it.

Because of that, I no longer have Mplayer installed. It's a hog, and it's a hog that barely worked on my system. Gxine is much more gracious, and you don't need to tweak the color, hue, brightness, and contrast settings to get a decent looking image.

Blessed be!
Pappy
