the fonts all appear to have a variable linewidth. eg, letters like N have two vertical lines, and one of these will be thick, the other thin. this is on 1080p. ubuntu doens't have this problem, only gentoo. happens on all fonts.

A screenshot might help to identify the exact problem. Basically:

1. Are all fonts affected or only one? Which?
2. Is your (TFT?) monitor using its native resolution?

this is on a tv, it is running at 1920x1080 (1080p). this is confirmed by the screen itself, which shows the current resolution. as mentioned, the issue isn't prevelent in kubuntu.

(edit, accidently said gnome)

Could be a problem with hinting. How's your fontconfig setup? Are you using autohinter?

Use the xeffects ebuilds. They improve font rendering enormously.

Your DPI setting in about:config might be wrong. Search for dpi in about:config in firefox and set it to 0 (zero). That forces firefox to use the same DPI setting as the rest of the system.

Actually, I just found the setting name: layout.css.dpi

I want to repeat this:

1. Are all fonts affected or only some? (And now we know that only in FF)

And still, a screenshot would tell us more than 10 messages ;-)

Another thing to consider, given the apparent scope of the problem, could it be a problem with Pango?

problem has been solved by setting the size and dpi in about:config in firefox, as well as emerging gtk-engines-qt, which puts a gtk settings panel in the kde control panel. now mostly everything is ok. the only issue is a 1 pixel argument on the scroll bar -- there is a black line on the side that sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn't. not a big issue. "full hinting" in the AA settings in KDE fixed the other font issue with the multiple linewidths.

The same happened in my case for thunderbird2 also. I applied the same setting in
.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default/user.js:
Code:
user_pref("layout.css.dpi", 0)
