I'm using 2.10.3 although I've had problems with earlier versions too.

I've been having problems over the past year with Evolution-- it's getting progressively less stable. It crashes for no reason and takes forever to check for new messages and shut down. Does anyone else have such problems? Now, it's taking about 20 mins to download a few messages (pop3).

Does anyone have any way to speed-up Evolution and make it more stable?

What is going on with Evolution development anyway? I submitted bug reports (on two different issues) over four years ago and they still haven't been addressed! I'm not impressed. The only thing that is perfect about Evolution is its name because it seems to take millions of years for anything worthwhile to happen.

Sounds like it is time for you to switch to Thunderbird.

(Sorry, I don't have any solutions to your problem, but Thunderbird is great!)

Have you tried creating a new user, logging into X as that user, and running evo? It's possible your profile has built up cruft over time.

It is possible. And I'm sure that's contributing to the problem. However, I have thousands of messages that what to have access to. If I start a new profile I won't have access to those messages. I'm sure I wouldn't have this problem with an empty inbox, but I don't. There must be other people who have the same issues as me or did everyone just switch over to Thunderbird?

Evolution is stable for me - been using it for 6 years. Try version 2.12.1, then submit bugs upstream.

Unfortunately, this thread is typical of all threads related to Evolution instability. Responses consist of:

1. "Yeah I stopped using Evolution a long time ago because of this (or another) issue and switched to Thunderbird (or some other mail client)."
2. "Evolution works perfectly fine for me."

Why is this the case? How can I troubleshoot these problems? It is clear that submitting a bug report won't solve anything. Why is the Gnome project using this program if it has so many problems?

Painfully Slow;
If your using pop3 try without Spamassassin and IMAP support;
edit --> plugins and just uncheck them and restart it.
I think it is the spamassassin plugin but not sure;

That seems to fix the speed issue (thanks!) but not the stability issue.

I had massive stability problems with evo 2.10.3 (random crashes, slowdowns), but when I changed to 2.12 (2.12.1 now) evo became stable once again.

I've upgraded to 2.12.1 and I'm still having stability issues. Namely, crashing after downloading my messages.

Still having problems with it and now I cannot even downgrade! (it crashes during the build.)

It seems that my 'Sent' file is corrupt. There are many messages missing and when I move the "entire" folder (effectively emptying it) to a new one within Evolution the 'Sent' file is still a few gigs even though it should be empty. I suspect those missing messages are in there, but just corrupt or something. Any assistance would be appreciated...
