hello everyone,

i just upgraded to the 2.6.23-gentoo kernel and changed from kernel-alsa to portage-alsa including oss emulation.

somehow all 32bit applications seem not to work anymore..ooffice-bin, skype, thunderbird-bin, firefox-bin. it all says something similar to this:
Code:

/usr/bin/aoss: line 10: /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/aoss: line 10: /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: Success

i'm working on revdep-rebuild right now, but im not sure, if thats the problem...
anyone knows if thats a known migration problem when changing from kernel-alsa to the portage-alsa?
any ideas?

thanks in advance

If I understand your problem correctly, you mean you changed from using the kernel sound drivers to the portage media-sound/alsa-driver.

The two methods don't support all the same sound cards.
Some work one way and not necessarily the other.
My integrated Intel HD audio sound card, for example, works with the alsa-driver and not my kernel 2.6.22-r8 drivers.
Here's the Gentoo guide for setting up ALSA using either method.

hm..i tried going backwards and using the kernel alsa again...still no go with all my 32bit applications.
i searched around once more and found some clues that i might have a problem with my aoss32 libs.
trying to start an app via "aoss32 skype" results in:
Code:

ERROR: ld.so: object 'libaoss.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
/usr/bin/skype: line 10: /opt/skype/skype: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/skype: line 10: /opt/skype/skype: Success

any more ideas?

Try re-emerging the emul-linux-x86 packages as well as the afflicted 32 bit packages.

problem lied elsewhere...right in front of me actually, but I somehow moved on alsa and tried blaming it..

i accidently removed 32bit apps support out of my kernel...so, its pretty obvious what was the prob

thanks again

I have the same problem.

Quote:

gamez@alpha /usr/lib $ aoss32 /opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmware
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libaoss.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

How could you fix them ?
