My /etc/env.d contains:

00basic 01hostname 05gcc 70less gcc

If I understand correctly portage uses these files to generate the /etc/ld.so.conf file.

What else is this dir used for? What do the numbers mean? Why is this better than editing ld.so.conf manually? What is the gcc directory for? Is this documented somewhere?
