Hi, this is my first time trying to install gentoo, so far everything was going ok until it was time to install additional packages.
I got an error saying that a fatal error occurred because it couldnt emerge dev-perl/IO-socket-SSL-1.002
Is there a way to fix this? id hate to have to start the whole install process all over again...

EDIT: I clicked on the option to retry the same step, and i got the same error again, the other options are to go to console and retry after exitingthe console, or to stop the install, is there a way to fix this from the console?

Thanks in advance, Isshino

Error messages, please. Hard to diagnose without some details.

However, from the version you say Portage is attempting to install, my initial guess is that you haven't yet done an "emerge --sync". See the Working with Gentoo and Working with Portage chapters of the Handbook for details.

The whole error is:

""
There was an Exception received during the install that is outside of the normal install errors. This is a bad thing. The error was:
EmergePackageError :FATAL: emerge: Could not emerge
dev-perl/IO-Socket-SSL-1.002!
You have several ways of handling this. If you cannot resolve it, please submit a bug report (after searching to make sure it's not a known issue and verifying you didn't do something stupid) with the contents of /var/log/install.log and /tmp/installprofile.xml and the version of the installer you used.

""
The options i have are:
1. Drop to console and then retry on return.
2. Just retry the step (i tried this, it didnt work)
3. Clean up (unmount partitions) and exit
4. Just exit.

Ive been doing a command line install from the live CD, and so far ive been choosing the 'recommended' options, dont think ive done anything stupid so far :P

Oh. Alas, the Gentoo 2007.0 GUI Installer is buggy (and the command-line one as well; they're actually the same program). You might get some insight from that thread, but you'd serve yourself well to do a manual Handbook-based install.

isshino,

It looks as if you have been using the ncurses (menus in the console) interface to the installer.
The installer fails for some users, its still a work in progress.

Meanwhile you should try the command line install from a root console as dis document in this handbook

The Handbook-based install is totally manual: there is no installer. You just follow the instructions in the Handbook. You can use the command line of the LiveCD; no need to download and burn something else.

On the bright side, if a step fails, we can help you diagnose the problem with that particular step. When you correct it, you can move on from there. :)

If you run into any troubles, and are unsure how the operation should work (or look) take a view of these visual flash tutorials. They follow the handbook for easy viewing.

But, please read and use the handbook. These are only good if you do not understand how to accomplish an operation there.
