Is there a gui user manager for gnome? I want to add/edit/remove users and groups and I'm sick of the commandline tools.

Thanks.

I'm running Gnome 2.3.3 and I see one at Applications--> Desktop Preferences --> System Tools --> Users. I am not sure whether this is in the default Gnome install or if I've picked it up as a byproduct of some other package recently installed. I've been on an emerge frenzy of late...

Looks like a nice tool if you are into that sort of thing though for sure!

Cheers,
~arker

Edit: I looked at the properties of the menu item...

Code:

arker2@newton arker2 $ qpkg -f /usr/bin/users-admin
gnome-extra/gnome-system-tools *

I did an emerge rsync and accept_keywords="~x86" and it still only offers Gnome 2.2.1 and no package exists called gnome-system-tools (even on the Online Package Database on the Gentoo site. How did you get these?

Thanks. :)

They're prolly in the new gnome. Check out the other forums here for that version.

breakmygentoo.net is the place you want to look at and is what iwasbiggs was talking about.

I have BMG gnome2.3.3 build and do not have gnome-system-tools. You sure this isn't something ximian added to their package?

Latest version of gnome-system-tools is 0.25.0 as I know. It is consisted of following modules:

users-admin
time-admin
runlevel-admin
network-admin and
boot-admin

Gentoo,as platform, is supported in only one module [can't remember which one]. Is there any work in progress about this ?

Hope network-admin will bring one nice ppp dialer and hope GST will become a part of new GNOME 2.4 :)

Problem solved:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gst/screenshots.html

Edit: Version 0.26 is out now

Edit 2: Here's an ebuild
http://www.ruinedsoft.com/gentoo/gnome-system-tools-0.26.1.ebuild

Copy it into your overlay directory under gnome-extra/gnome-system-tools/
Code:

#ebuild gnome-system-tools-0.26.1.ebuild digest
#emerge gnome-system-tools-0.26.1.ebuild

Submitting this to gentoo...
Edit: because of the lack of total support, this program won't be available to gentoo through portage in its current version. You can however, dangerously test the ebuild from www.breakmygentoo.net .

On the GST page it says that they support Time and Users for Gentoo, but only Users work in the current ebuild.

There's also a 0.27 release out now. What goes into making a backend?
It can't be too hard to support time/date changes can it?

While date/time and users are "supported" on gentoo, they are very buggy (at least on gst 0.27). Users-admin usually freeze and destroy my user config files (group, passwd, shadow), while date freeze without making the changes I want. So I suggest you to backup /etc before working with these tools, and more important, submit the bugs you find. That´s the only way we will get gentoo support. :D

And BTW, users-admin create an independent group for each user instead of the gentoo way of adding users to the users group. I reported that already and is fixed in cvs.
