Hi,

I have a Geforce 8400 GS. When using a window manager like KDE or fluxbox I find switching windows or tabs (like in firefox) rather slow. It might take like 300ms for a window to switch: it is not instantaneous as I would like it to be. Itś not really that annoying but I always strive for perfection ;) and I chose gentoo for its presumed performance so..

What I also find weird is the following:

Quote:

14701 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2940.056 FPS
14936 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2987.132 FPS
14984 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2996.782 FPS
15001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2999.995 FPS
14977 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2995.327 FPS
14966 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2993.159 FPS
14811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2962.017 FPS
14965 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2992.939 FPS
15014 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3002.783 FPS
15065 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3012.904 FPS
15067 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3013.276 FPS
15066 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3013.029 FPS
15069 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3013.629 FPS
15066 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3013.169 FPS
14932 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2986.270 FPS
15024 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3004.669 FPS
15034 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3006.617 FPS
15065 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3012.910 FPS
15065 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3012.864 FPS
15067 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3013.257 FPS
21132 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4226.303 FPS
25417 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5083.350 FPS
23784 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4756.636 FPS
24472 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4894.306 FPS
25496 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5099.064 FPS
25522 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5104.221 FPS
25418 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5083.544 FPS
25177 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5035.314 FPS

Why does the glxgears score increase ? I was not doing anything special at the time.

Another strange thing is I lack the
agp directory in /proc/driver/nvidia
I do have this
Quote:

Spetsnaz@Seefhoek /proc/driver/nvidia $ ll

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 nov 6 18:41 cards
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 nov 6 18:41 registry

I was suspecting I do not have AGP, but only PCI-express but why would nvidia use the agpgart module then ?

Some general information:
I have Dell Inspiron 1720 with a Intel Core 2 Duo.
I run linux 2.6.22-r8

If you require more information, I will be happy to supply it.

Best Regards,

Spetsnaz

Got CPU frequency scaling enabled?

It's not - zero means False.

a) you are using a 8400 - this beast is really, really slow.

b) if your glxgears fps increase it might be the CPU OR the GPU increasing its frequency (or both).

If your GPU is able to change its core/memory frequencies you might want to have a look at nvidia-settings and the README.

c) maybe your video is slow, because of incorrect/stupid mtrr - a common problem with intel based systems.
