I have a home server mail server running qmail and noticed that I have trouble sending email to certain domains. hud.gov and comcast.net in particular. I can send/receive to anywhere else and just wanted to know if my smtp-routes is set correctly. Currently I have these two item in smtproutes:
Code: |
myhomedomain.com:
:myisp.com
|
Are these correct? TIA _________________ Gentoo x86

What sort of trouble are you having?
In smtproutes ":my_isps_mail_server" will cause all your outgoing mail to route via your ISP's mail system which is probably what you want and is what you have set. You also have an artificial route (use MX records) to override the route to your ISP for your own domain which again is probably what you want.
So yes I think your smtp routes is fine.
Given that you are able to send mail elsewhere then i would say that your ISP has trouble delivering your mail. This is usually due to anti spam blacklisting.
If you have a static IP address then I would highly recommend delivering your own mail rather than relying on an ISP. Even if you have a dynamic IP there are free/cheap services to host your MX records which will update according your your changing address. |

I've always thought it was over aggressive spam filter by comcast or hud, but was never sure. So are you suggesting that I remove the :myispcom line from my smtproutes? _________________ Gentoo x86

Yes. That way you have much better control over what happens also you get "real" error messages. Before you do that though have a look at http://www.dnsstuff.com or something similar and check your IP address against a lot of DNSBLs.
Now, if you bin Qmail and discover Exim. Whoops sorry, nasty slip there
Cheers
