I am half way through a gentoo install, and although the kernel compiled successfully, I am unable to install programs using emerge. Emerge gentoo-sources worked, but I am assuming that this is basically a download. commands such as emerge portage, and emerge vixie-cron all failed with the can't create executables error.

| Nevermind- it's athlon64, not athalon64, which is what I had in make.conf. |
