(i meant to reply to "update ALL installed packages)
I am interested too in this question because of the following:
Let's say there are 2 versions of Qt installed.. version 2.x and 3.x
emerge --unmerge --safe removes the 2.x version
emerge update --world installs it again.
What I would like to know is how to (safely) update the system that it would not need the 2.x version and uses the 3.x version.
In other words, would it not be nice if there is a major update on a library that all that make use of the older one are automatically updated to the new library? |

Certain programs will not work with an updated version of a dependency, which is why you have to force Portage to remove older versions, as the uninstall could cause other programs to stop working. I believe Qt is such a dependency, like recent versions of libpng. As an example, when libpng was updated by Portage when doing an 'emerge --update world' I had to re-emerge several KDE3 packages because they were compiled against an older version of libpng which no longer existed.
