Ok, I've been following this thread for a while. Firstly, these redhat binaries don't work for everyone, and this could be for various reasons (library versions, gcc ...). I've been working on getting IcedTea to compile from source and have succeeded it seems.

I'll be making a source based ebuild soon as I refine the build process, it currently requires gcj to be installed (but it's not used as the compiler). Also, only tested using sun-jdk-1.7.0.0_alpha24 as the compiler.

please do so ASAP! The technique in this thread doesn't work on my computer. The plugin seems to get recognized properly but all applets appear as a grey box :(

For my 100th post,

I give you an ebuild to compile icedtea-1.4.

Unfortunately I still haven't been able to successfully compile IcedTea.
Last try was with today's hg pull (b24 based).

So.. I bumped the ebuild for icedtea-bin to b24 from fedora9 development.
http://gimpel.ath.cx/svn/gimpel/dev-java/icedtea-bin/

I'll take a look at their .spec file how the freaking heck they compiled it :P

Do you have a source for that rpm, I can't seem to find it. I too can't get icedtea to compile.

Uff. No idea what happened, but the src.rpm used to be in here:
ftp://ftp.uni-bayreuth.de/pub/redhat.com/fedora/linux/development/source/SRPMS/

Now there is only 1.6 openjdk. And I already purged the src stuff for 1.7 off my disk.

you can use emerge =icedtea-1.7.0 (will use the older b19 ones) because I don't found the b24 too. I have searched a lot but I think there was a java-1.7.0-icedtea-plugin-1.7.0.0-0.29.b24.fc9.x86_64.rpm but each Google search was gone to a "not found".

The weird thing is that b19 is found and works, just can't get the updated b24 rpm.

I can't find any 1.7 jdk on their servers anymore o.O

But there are things like ftp://ftp.uni-bayreuth.de/pub/redhat.com/fedora/linux/development/x86_64/os/Packages/java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-0.5.b06.fc9.x86_64.rpm which seems to be a 1.6 64bit browser plugin.

Maybe they just renamed things?

I found some here:

http://fedora.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/linux/releases/test/9-Alpha/Fedora/x86_64/os/Packages/

I will try to mod the ebuild and see if I can get that to work by changing fedora_v to

FEDORA_V="1.7.0.0-0.23.b24.fc9.x86_64"

Just tried it, I edited the ebuild and it fetched and installed fine but didn't work. I am just gonna stick with b19 until this really gets fixed.

Hi,

b19 works for me also fine (with map24.com) but with other older applets I will get problems - as example like old nitendo games from www.virtualnes.com which need plugin >1.5

Hmm,

has anyone an idea where javaws (Webstart Launcher) was left in java/icedtea 1.7 ?? Surely it seems more that javaws is only available in 32bit but I don't found it in 64bit versions.

Before every time I used javaws from Blackdown 1.4 but now I must use >=1.6 for a application. Maybe the name was changed but I don't found any information about this.

Hi there!

I used the 1.7.0 ebuild from:

svn co http://gimpel.ath.cx/svn/gimpel/dev-java/icedtea-bin/

and commented out the dependency for gcc, because I only wanted the java plugin. And I must say it worked fine. I'm still at gcc-4.1 w/o the gcj flag.

instead of going through the hassle of compiling a masked gcc with the gcj flag. Because I think the majority of users only want the java plugin, and not necessarily compile java applications.

cheers

I have created a new ebuild for openjdk-bin from the latest fedora core 10 development version. Can be found here:

This is the old thread about using a binary RPM from some other distro (Fedora).

So you can
a) use j79zlr's updated openjdk-bin package
or b) use geki's icedtea6 snapshots from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-379693.html
or c) do the PITA method and use the version in java-overlay, which pulls in at least 3 JDKs to build 1.

I prefer and use b), but a) is the fastest regarding compile time etc. c) is for guys who use their pc as a heater. :)

@ j79zlr: are you sure pkg_postinst message is still valid? I think fedora uses gcc-4.3 too meanwhile.
