[Solved] Need help emerge vmware-modules

Hi all,

I just upgraded my kernel to gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r9.
Now I'm upgrading my bigger apps to a new version. One is vmware-server. While emerging vmware-modules I get this error:

Maybe you could upgrade to the 2007.0 profile before debugging that. Maybe it has a relation with the compilation error...

may be its a good idea to emerge and update the package 'linux-headers' first (guess 2.6.11 is pretty old).

this time, it seems to whine that you don't have CONFIG_MODULES=y in your kernel. just verify if that's a genuine crib (' less /usr/src/linux/.config | grep -i CONFIG_MODULES ') and then you may do whatever

(aside, if you have updated gcc, make sure kernel has been compiled with same gcc as the one you are using now for building vmware modules.)

Yeah, you GCC is pretty old.

Just checked my kernel config and yes it is compiled with CONFIG_MODULES=y.

And why do you think my gcc is old?

looks that eventually it has become more of a system upgrade thread

. you know, its pretty harsh - emerging gcc and then the entire toolchain and world. but then, its a full blown upgrade between 2 gcc versions after may be a couple of years - so not bad spending a day or two with these things running in background. (actually, i am snickering about what might lie ahead - xorg and desktop :p.) (ps : was this really necessary

Ok, thanks. I will come back after upgrading my system. I hope vmware will work after this.

A clean install would be nice. But it is too much work to get all the apps and services running like now.

Ok here I am again.

After emerge system & emerge world & compiling new kernel I still cannot emerge vmware-modules. Same error as posted before.

Any help is appreciated.

I didn't measure it. A couple of hours! After upgrade I had some minor problems to solve. Trac still doesn't run. But the worst is vmware-server. I saw a bug in bugzille (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142811) but it doesn't seem to be the same one.

Any ideas?

hm! unfortunately not solved. This is what I tried now:

Installed a new gentoo 2007 in a windows vmware. There I could successful emerge vmware-server.
Strange - in this machine it emerged vmware-modules-1.0.0.17 and not 1.0.0.15 as in my production machine? Why?

I realized that I didn't have "Automatic kernel module loading" in my kernel. But after recompiling with this option and restarting it still doesn't work.

After this I unmerged the vmware-modules and deleted the directory /usr/portage/app-emulation/vmware-modules.

Now I get this error:

Ok, it is solved! :-)

I deleted all vmware* in /usr/portage/distfiles/ and /usr/portage/app-emulation/.
After an emerge --sync I could successfully emerge vmware-server.

Now I cannot login from windows-console. But this should be solvable.
