|
|
If I want to install a 64-bit system with an Intel Core 2 Duo (x86-64) CPU, would I have to use the AMD64 minimal install CD? or would the x86 suffice? If the x86 is suffice, or even with the AMD64, how would I have it acknowledge that I want the system to be 64-bit instead of 32-bit? Any help with this is greatly appreciated. |

You will need to use the AMD64 installer. It will automatically setup your system to be 64-bit. If you have questions along the way, please just ask. _________________ “Truth, like infinity, is to be forever approached but never reached.” --Jean Ayres (1972)

Do as you wish, but I would _not_ use any of the Gentoo installers, as they are full of bugs. Just go by the Handbook, you will have no problems and will learn a lot. _________________

I'm sorry, I didn't mean the INSTALLER; I simply meant to use the minimal installation disc for AMD64. Sorry I wasn't clear. _________________ “Truth, like infinity, is to be forever approached but never reached.” --Jean Ayres (1972)

To answer your question :
No, the x86 CD would not work if you want to do a 64bit installation. Use the amd64 CD and an amd64 stage tarball.
The 32bit or 64bit part is determined by the CHOST= setting in your /etc/make.conf . This will already be set to the correct setting when you use the correct stage tarball. |
