I've used an ov511-based camera for quite some time, and yesterday when I plugged it in it woudln't work. This is the first time I've tried it under Gentoo. There are a multitude of problems:

modprobe ov511 loads the module, but /dev/video0 doesn't exist (I've used ./MAKEDEV, but it's still not there)

Compiling usb-ohci as a module and lsmod'ing shows that both usb-ohci and ov511 are unused upon loading

The camera's also stopped getting power from the USB port, which it did when usb-ohci was compiled into the kernel. This is probably because usb-ohci is unused even when I load it.

Is there a magical Gentoo command that I've missed here? USE="dontfuckwithov511" perhaps?

I've got an OV511 as well, I'm using the latest stable 1.65 driver from http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511 and before I use my camera (through xawtv or whatever) the module is listed as unused. As soon as I fire up an application that uses it, the webcam fires into life though. You probably don't have a /dev/video0 entry because devsfd will only create the entry when an application requests it (I think). I have my USB support compiled into the kernel, don't know whether it makes a difference as I've never had it as a module though, and I'm using UHCI support as well.

Ah, yeah, it automagically started working for me too, now. The camera had been wet, so it might just have dried up and started working.

Thanks for the advice, though.
