seems like you are missing some fonts maybe? I don't use KDE, but is there some package like "kde-fonts" or something similar. Try emerging that again and see if it helps it.

Hello, back again.
Now i wil like to know what fonts are missing.(everythings there)
Wel i did a emerge kde so i got the newer version of kde 3.2.??
rebooted( yes rebooted) did a startx and walla...... :x
Same problem...... :x so i was :x .
I deleted the ./kde* directories in my home dir, restarted kde, and
got the chance to config kde so i was ( :D ) so i started konq,
typed https://forums.gentoo.org and got ( 8O :( ) because i got the same [ :x ] fonts again.
Well it's an improvement because there's no square fonts on the desktop any more (i did do an emerge sharefonts) but could it be that my truetype fonts are screwed :?:
It seems that my internet fonts are screwed...
Anybody has a clue....

The default font, IIRC, is Helvetica. Sure as hell wouldn't blame you for deleting that - Helvetica and Freetype don't seem to play nice, so Helvetica gets no AA (I'm not talking about Microsoft's Helvetica, which does) - and seems to be totally b0rked in your installation.

Well i've looked and tryed all but still having problems.
I deleted all fonts.* and fonts. files in my /usr/X11R6/lib/bin/fonts/
and the rest.
And tryed to surf again, this time i could see fonts, but because i deleted the scale files( i think :? ) they were not scaled so looking awfull.
So i copied my ttf files from MS-box to Gentoo box,and did the mkfontdir
and ttmkfdir thing.
Tryed Carlito's way( the movie get it) fc-cache -fv ,but things went back to the old setting scaled but [ :x ] square again.
I'm cleary missing something here but...... :? :? :?

I don't run kde, but in my system, the xfonts server (XFS) was messing up a file called fonts.dir in several of my fonts directories.
Code:
 ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/*/fonts.dir
If this shows any fonts.dir files that are 2 bytes long, something probably wiped them out. This was causing gimp 1.2.4 to not recognize the fonts in my system. The way I fixed it was buy turning off the automatic font scanning in /etc/conf.d/xfs
Code:
# If this is set to "yes", then the xfs rc-script will
# scan all the font directories in /etc/X11/fs/config for
# changes, and if any, will add the required files.  This
# may take a while on very old boxes, so set it to "no"
# if it takes too long for you.

SETUP_FONTDIRS="no"

Also you can use the command xfontsel to see what fonts your xfontserver knows about. Lastly, I had to restore the original fonts.dir files from the original package, and I even keep them around for the next time something clobbers them.

After restoring the files (if this is your problem) you might need commands like
Code:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp rehash

The ideea was to remove the 75 and 100dpi entries in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, not the fonts themselves.

/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp rehash

Mr Maddog.
A good day to you.
ok here goes.
I checked my fonts.dir files and yes they were only 2 bytes long.
So i did a /usr/bin/X11/mkfontdir command in my truetype font dir and a made a new fonts.dir file wich showed much more than 2 bytes, and then i used the /usr/X11R6/bin/ttmkfdir to make new fonts.scale files.
Then i edit the /etc/conf.d/xfs and changed the line SETUP_FONTDIRS="YES" to SETUP_FONTDIRS="NO" (as you did),did the /usr/X11R6/bin/xset fp+ commands, but when i did the rehash part i got an error
Code:
bad font path element (#64), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

Bla bla.
so i restarted kde and it still looked the same, so i went into kde font config and did a default command and walla it workes.
No more [ :x ] square fonts.
Nows come a stupid question about this

The ones that were messing up on me were freefont sharefont and URW which came from freefonts-0.10.tar.gz, urw-fonts.tar.gz and sharefonts-0.10.tar.gz (at least for me).

For a permanent fix ??? I think the font-handling is changing. Lots of people seem to have xfont challenges... just search the forums. The steps I took seem to survive kernal updates and reboots, so that's good enough for me.

Cheers,
Mark
