hi, everytime i try to emerge the nvidia kernel i get an error saying it needs MTRR enabled in the kernel. well ok, so i recompiled my kernel with MTRR support added in and rebooted. i log back in and do another emerge of the nvidia kernel and i still get the same error. i have agpgart enabled and i know i can always go download the drivers from nvidia's web site, but i'd just like to know what's up with this. thanks!
EDIT: well, it looks like i can't even compile the nvidia kernel i downloaded from nvidia's web site because of an unresolved symbol involving add_mtrr and del_mtrr. i did an ls /proc/mtrr and it showed nothing so what's going on? it says in the kernel help file that once it was enabled and the kernel recompiled, etc that a /proc/mtrr file would be created. |

ok, i fixed it. in case anyone else has this problem, don't forget that /boot isn't mounted by default so what i had to do was:
mount /boot
THEN
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
umount /boot
reboot and voila. |

Whenever you build a new kernel you need to mount /boot and copy it over. Unlike the way that holymacaroni did it you should always keep your old working kernel around in case you screwed up something building the new one. You don't want to be in a situation where you copied over your only good kernel with a bad one and have to boot rescue media to recover. _________________ Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.
