|
|
Hi so I am a total newbie. Please do not hate :)
So I picked up an old Linux box from a garage sale and gentoo looks to be installed when I boot.
however the last few lines of the boot process read as follows
Starting vixie-cron...
Starting local...
kernel,shmmax = 455885696
wine-preloader: no process killed
how do I boot into linux os. nothing i type works except for shutdown and reboot, even ls doesn't work. what command boot the os?
many thanks |

So you don't get a login prompt? What's the very last line printed?

The message about starting vixie-cron and local indicate that the OS is booting. All you typically have to do is turn the system on. The fact that you don't get a login prompt indicates that the installation is damaged. Probably the best thing for you to do is to reinstall your OS of choice. If that's Gentoo, then likewoah provided you the link to the installation documentation. Write back if you need help.
If not, well, live long and prosper.

If you get a little "X" appearing then the system is booted and trying to start the graphical environment. How old is this computer, and is it connected to the internet? _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

Hmmm....Gentoo should pretty well fly on that. If the graphical environment never came up you can take a look at the /etc/hosts file and make sure it is present and proper. If you are stuck at the screen with a "little X" in the middle try typing CONTROL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get rid of it or CONTROL-ALT-F2 to get a logon prompt. _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

Good, have fun with your new machine! You'll probably want to emerge --sync followed by emerge -uDNva world to get it up to date. _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |
