Internet Failure

I usually connect my computer through my university's network, and it works great.

I am back at home right now for the first time with gentoo installed on my computer. When I try to obtain an IP address it takes a long time. Once connected I get connection failed messages through firefox and any other program attempting to access the internet. I don't have any experience dealing with this sort of network problem and don't know exactly what to do.

I have ubuntu on a separate partition on this computer, which I am writing from right now, and the internet is working fine. Is this a kernel configuration problem or something? Just post with suggestions and I will greatly appreciate it.

Tell us about your network and computer.
What kind of computer. What kind of router
How many ethernet connections. Wireless, or wired? What brand of adapter cards.
Post "ifconfig " and if wireless, "iwconfig"
Post "route"
Post content of "/etc/resolv.conf"
Post content of "/etc/conf.d/net"
Are you using wpa_supplicant. If so, post contents of "/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"
Can you "ping -c 4 google.com"
Can you "ping -c 4 72.14.207.99" (google's ip address)

What does your university's configuration look like?

Well I got it working, I added some kernel options. The one problem is I got an iptables error after I did the kernel updates, so I will tinker with it a bit. I will be sure to post back here when I have the time to pursue this further. Thanks for the quick response.

So the internet is working very well, but since I enabled the home router options in the kernel, per the gentoo documentation: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/home-router-howto.xml I can't seem to get iptables working. I get the following error when I boot the computer:
