Device sharing

Is it possible to share devices over network? Like NFS, just devices instead of file systems.

Specifically I would like to share a DVD drive between computers so xine can play DVDs from it on all boxes.
Xine needs to access the device directly to play the disk in it.

Furthermore, I figured that device sharing could be useful in many cases.

NBD (Network Block Device) does exactly this, however I have no idea whether or not it works with optical drives.
