|

I'm trying to install gentoo on an old pentium 160 system with SIS5582 ( I think) chipset. The installation gets to detecting ide devices and completely freezes. Specifically:
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq14
I read of some similar problem with some laptops, but these were supposedly corrected with RC4. What can I do to get past this problem?
Thanks for any help. |

Make sure that you configure the kernel for the hardware that's actually in the box. Most kernel panics / freezes are caused by the wrong drivers for certain hardware. |

How would I do this? I'm not even getting to a config screen. I boot the computer from the CD, hit enter at the Gentoo splash screen, and the computer freezes while booting. |
