fonts chopped off on bottom after kde358 upgrade and world

I emerged world the other day, and I am having trouble with fonts.

It seems the line spacing is too small, because all the descenders get cut off, for truetype, type1 and also BITMAP fonts.

I have checked:
xorg.conf
fonts.conf
changing the KDE theme
changing the style
changing fonts
google
search forums.gentoo.org

Has anyone had this before? I don't know what to look at further. Throw out any hints you have. Thanks!
