|

Since GWN can't be published at constant pace, I propose this:
1. Let's start calling it Gentoo Newsletter.
2. Let's publish it when there are enough stories or some important stuff. No need to hurry it. No need to answer to threads like this.
Or.
1. Let's not have any regular newsletter, but only news and articles posted on the front page whenever they are ready. Why does it have to be (quasi) weekly?
I also propose:
Gentoo news forum.
Let every news item on front page have a link to forum thread on a new Gentoo news forum. We'd get maybe a better link between forums and gentoo homepage.
PS. This is not a rant about not having a weekly newsletter. I fully acknowledge that there is only limited manpower writing it. _________________ Paludis, the way packages are meant to be managed.

Ack, the weekly is irritating
And there is really no need for a weekle one, just let it accumulate until there is enough stuff for an article, or something really important happens.
But GWN sounds much better than GN or GMN (M=monthly)
regards

I agree with dropping the newsletter and breaking up the news page to something like this:
Post individual short stories / articles as people write them +
Post weekly auto-generated statistics like what is at the end of the newsletters now.
More fluid, less responsibility, and a much better gentoo news rss feed (though I subscribe to gentoo universe and planet larry anyway...) |

I agree with the others
Rather than stress people out with feeling like they need to get a newsletter out as often as possible with limited manpower, just have automated weekly statistics and post important news when needed on the front page/linked to a forum for discussion. Other than security updates and package removal notifications, how often is there an actual story?
This isn't to say we don't appreciate the people past and present who have worked for free to make the newsletter. I always like reading about a random dev and the section that summarized what was going on on the forums during times that I stop checking here very frequently, but we should give it a more accurate/realistic name for now. |

This gets my vote.
But lets not forget how much work a system with constant updates is maintain. So what happens when the people who look after it run out of time. Then someone will get upset because the main page is not updated as often as (s)he would like, and they suggest a newsletter? It could happen. That said, think removing the "Weekly" from the title is a good idea as it is far from weekly.
Although for those who are interested in a news source that is more up to date, you should check out http://planet.gentoo.org/ I have the rss feed set up in Akgregator. It's only the devs blogs, but I find that they often have interesting or important things to say. _________________ Dont make it idiot proof, make it work.

Moved from Gentoo Chat to Gentoo User Representatives. Since it is a suggestion it seems more appropriate here. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

The "weekly" in GWN has been a disgrace for I don't care to remember how long. So yes, please, let's rename it to something that reflects reality. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

This gets my vote too, and it's not meant as a criticism of the GWN editor/s. |

This is a recurring theme over the past few years. It is difficult to bring out a quality newsletter with fresh exciting information every week with a staff of volunteers. I agree that "Weekly" should be removed from the newsletter. You can't get rid of the newsletter though. Every good distro has a newsletter of some sort.
I think the newsletter should be delivered about once a month. It could be called "Gentoo World" Newsletter, that way we could keep the acronym GWN. "Gentoo World" simply meaning, news around the world about Gentoo.
All of the weekly stats related stuff that is usually at the bottom of the GWN should be moved to a separate "Gentoo Stats" web page that can be updated daily/weekly or whatever. _________________ Athlon 64 3200+, 80G WD sata hd + 200G IDE, 1G Geil DDR400, MSI K8T Neo

Very good idea, although I would miss the GWN acronym.
At least by getting rid of "weekly" we won't need to hear another reason why Gentoo is dying over on Slashdot (or the forums) |

yup I would go along with Gentoo World News - has a nice impressive ring to it (Grin) - and would take the pressure off the devs and such, allowing them to focus on the real business of keeping Gentoo working well and securely.

Seems like quite a few people like the idea of changing the name of the GWN; however, I wouldn't even know where to start to make this a reality. Sure, we could create a poll thread here in the forums, but would that really matter? I've mentioned the idea to the GWN editor (musikc) in on #gentoo-gwn a couple weeks back. She said that was something that needed to be discussed with wolf31o2. I haven't see him online to mention it. _________________ Athlon 64 3200+, 80G WD sata hd + 200G IDE, 1G Geil DDR400, MSI K8T Neo

First of all I'd like to thank Chrissy Fullam(?) who has done an awesome job keep the newsletter up to date of Gentoo going ons. I also too like ryker's suggestion of naming the newsletter the Gentoo World Newsletter. If a leadership structure was in place, regular meetings, blah blah blah it would be easier to transfer information from say the forums and bugzilla, something like this needs to be talked about. Though this is a volunteers distro, we can still bring about a leadership structure. Another time I suppose.
Until then maybe a simple feedback form for comments, ideas and hopefully submissions would be beneficial. |

I think you all agree with me that it looks like gentoo stop evolving when you hit gentoo.org.
The page should contain a bit more recent stuff, so why not show the most interesting/newes forum posts on the frontpage like on http://sabayonlinux.org/ the "Community activity" (thought it doesn't work for me )
And why not show the latest GLSA and/or portage additions.
This sould be done in a rather descent, no blinking, no flashing....
It would shows that gentoo is activley used and developed.
regards

Hmmm... I know by experience that delays are quite hard to sustain, especially on the long term. I'd say "at its own pace". Provided we don't have to wait too long inbetween...
