|
|
Hey,
Trying to set up my laptop to connect to the internet in a .. 'nice' way. I can either connect to the internet via ethernet or wlan.
Currently, during boot, eth0 is brought up, it does a DHCP request which takes too much time if I'm not connected to any ethernet (waiting for dhcpcd to timeout is a waste of time IMO). Now, my wireless needs manual setting up. Since I'm using ndiswrapper, I need to load the ndiswrapper module, issue a iwconfig command (essid, specify key, wlan mode, security mode) and then do a dhcpcd wlan0 to get an IP address.
Since it's a laptop, I'd like to have more control over all this. Bring eth0 up and set it up when I need it, same with wlan.
Back on Slackware I used to have seperate rc files (rc.wlan, rc.eth0) which I could execute when I needed them. Now, of course, I theoretically could make similar scripts for Gentoo, but I just don't want to do it the 'hard way' when _maybe_ there's a simpler way to do it (a 'Gentoo-specific' way which would take advantage of how Gentoo sets things up etc.).
Is /etc/conf.d/net any use? (currently, eth0 is configured in there)
I'm open to any ideas and pointers.
thanks
