|

Hi Folks,
I'm new to Gentoo platform. I'm looking to build a low power network appliance on an embedded platform that can be used for standard network services like: DHCP, DNS, Firewall, etc. I've looked at gentoo.org and other web sites and have not found any products/appliances/hardware that comes bundled with Gentoo. Following are some of my questions:
1. Are there any companies that make a pre-built network appliance that is based on Gentoo embedded platform? Please note that I am **not** looking for a traditional PC/Laptop. I would like a small footprint device that runs embedded Gentoo that uses CompactFlash or other sold-state storage device. This would be the ideal thing as I would not have to mess around with building such a device myself.
2. IF the answer to the first question is No, then are there any whitepaper/howto/guide that contain instructions on how to build such a device? This document should contain hardware vendor information (eg: system-board, enclosure, peripherals, etc.) so I know where I can purchase the components. In this case, I will purchase individual components and assemble them together.
My plan is to use such a device for my home network that can provide me with network services such as: VPN, Firewall (2-3 interfaces), DHCP, DNS. Currently, I have a Windows 2003 server that runs within a VMWare Image that functions as a Network "appliance". I would like to get away from this model as it requires my PC to be on all the time, not to mention the fact that the data medium is Hard-drive that can crash anytime.
If possible, please respond directly to me at sushantpool-dev@yahoo.com.
Thanks & Regards,

have a look at openwrt. it is not gentoo based but it will provide DHCP, DNS, VPN, firewall... on a cheap router you can buy off the shelf from department stores. It will be a lot cheaper and easier than building your own with the hardware and software. It is also highly configurable to your needs. I am happly running it on my linksys router. |
