PostPosted: Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:36 pm    Post subject: KDE kicker broken [solved] Reply with quote

Hi folks,

I have a strange problem with KDE kicker. On startup the kicker remains empty and not usable.
Only a desperate

Code:
killall -9 kicker && kicker

8O

let's the kicker startup as it should (showning all the icons, systray ...).
I already tried to reinstall kicker, kwin and kdesktop but the problem remains the same.
Even revdep-rebuild did not help.

Has anybody experienced the same?

The only thing that I see is that you have an old profile :

Code:

Portage 2.1.4_rc4 (default-linux/amd64/2006.1/desktop, gcc-4.2.2

Maybe you should upgrade to 2007.0.

thanx for your answer. I never realized this. :D

I just changed my /etc/make.profile.

I am currently running
Code:
emerge -avuD --newuse world

this could take awhile.

A lot of kde related packages are rebuilt now, I hope the update will solve my issue

After rebuilding about 250 Packages (which took the whole night) kicker is now loading correctly.

The bad news is, that half of my system is broken now, I hope revdep-rebuild will fix this (I'm currently emerging 23 packages via revdep-rebuild).

Thanks a lot for your help. This issue is solved :-D

Switching to the 2007.0 portage profile has a lot of nice side effects:

- konqueror doesn't crash anymore (at least it did not crash until now), with 2006.0 profile it used to crash pretty frequently
- kde seems to run a bit faster and much more smoothly
- amrok seems to run more stable now
- kmail crashes seem to be history now

and last but not least

- I never recognised the point "profile" when running eselect. I guess this won't happen again ;-)

I'm glad that I was able to help you with this.

And remember, when you will see in the GWN that Gentoo has release a new profile, change your profile and update your box :)
