Problem with splash screen and display after install

I followed the directions in the handbook and everything works ok so far. I am a complete noob and I have 2 issues:

1) When booting, after GRUB loads, the screen is all garbled up and looks funky until it gets into writing the status of what it's doing like when it puts [ ok ] on the right hand side. I can see the green with blue text but its all scrambled up then it just starts working out of no where.

2) I have a 20" widescreen (native 1680x1050). The livecd seems to do a better job at displaying the text than my installed environment.

Any hints on how I might fix these things? I do plan to install KDE but I want to make sure everything is in working order before I do that.
