I'm using sys-apps/hal-0.5.9-r3, pulled in by Gnome-2.20, which is marked stable in portage.

The USB storage device in question is my iPod - HAL reports that it is mounted on behalf of userid 1000 (that's me), but /etc/mtab says otherwise:

/dev/sdc2 /media/ipod vfat rw,nosuid,nodev 0 0

The permissions of the folders are 0:0 recursively (user/group root:root), and the iPod is effectively mounted as read-only. Any attempt to create (touch) a new file or folder results in "permission denied".

This prevents Banshee, GtkPod, Nautilus, etc, etc from working properly (cannot write/synchronize/rename/copy-to, etc)

This has also happened with a regular USB / vfat flash disk called KingMax, with a screenshot here -> http://vaiprime.visible-assets.com/~cfriedt/cannot_create_file.png.

Any suggestions?

Check your settings in GNOME under Preferences --> Removable Drives and make sure they are set correctly. If that doesn't work I would reinstall the gconf schemas:

Code:
gconftool2 --install-schema-file=/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-mount.schemas

Or you may just have to run revdep-rebuild which is always recommended when you update hal.

gconftool2 --install-schema-file=/etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-mount.schemas
