PHP: mbstring [SOLVED]

I'm looking to enable Mailparse on my PHP+Apache setup... I'm actually not entirely sure how to enable PECL modules, but my actual reason for posting is going back one step further:

I currently don't have mbstring enabled. PHPMyAdmin complains about this, but it's a dependency of Mailparse, so I want to get it work. It looks like you can configure it by running --enable-mbstring when building PHP. How do I do this when I'm letting portage build PHP, though? There's no mbstring USE flag.

- The "unicode" USE flag enables mbstring in PHP.
- there's a dev-php5/pecl-mailparse
