I know this is a broad question that may take a while to answer... but I thought I would see if it's something common anyway.
I have a Thinkpad 600x here (pIII coppermine 500mhz). It randomly locks up in Linux, but never has it locked up in Windows.
I am using these optimization flags: -march=i686 -O3 -pipe. I started from stage3, so not everything has these flags.
I tried using preempt and also without it. I have run memtest without any problems.
I have tried a couple different pcmcia net cards (as this is the only add-on hardware in the system), but they were just different versions of the 16 bit xircom card.
The lockups can sometimes be strange... as in every once in a while the mouse can still move, but nothing works.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

An update on this for those of you who might have the same problem.
I have determined that the lockup is caused by the kernel module for the old xircom cards (I'm not sure about the pcmcia-cs module). The lockup does not happen if I use a new xircom card (the ones that use the xircom_tulip_cb module) or if I use a non xircom card.
Hope that helps! |
