Authentication lock

Having just done a full install of Gentoo I tried to add a password to my account
and while the system allowed me to enter a password, it then came up with the
error "Authentication token lock busy". I've checked the obvious places (/etc and
/var/lock) for lockfiles, including dot files, and I can't find anything. The only thing
a Google search comes up with is setting the partition read/write, and that makes
no difference.

Has anyone seen this before? Having just spent a couple of days re-installing I
really don't want to go back to square one.
