I installed ALSA sound packages according to the Gentoo docs. I can play CD's with Grip but XMMS, aplay, ogle and all my other apps are unable to play sound.

XMMS looks like it is playing sound (I can see the visualization) but no sound comes out.

I have all of my channels set to 90% and unmuted.

What can I try to get my sound working?

Have you compiled your applications with alsa support? i.e. with USE flag "alsa" set. Have a look at your applications which might require re-emerging by
Code:
emerge -epv world | grep alsa

In xmms you have to
Code:
emerge alsa-xmms
then set xmms to use ALSA in Options->Preferences->Output plugin. Then configure the plugin to make sure its using the correct device.

Hi. It could also be that some, but not all, of the volume controls are turned down. Might be worth playing with alsamixer (or one of the GUI frontends). I found tweaking the volumes to be quite hit-and-miss and the exact volume controls you need can also depend on your method of speaker connection (e.g. digital or analogue).

And you have to unmute the Master and PCM channels to begin with.

I had these things done already:

- I had alsa in my USE variable in /etc/make.conf
- I had emerged alsa-xmms and set the output plugin to Alsa
- I had Master, PCM and CD channels (in alsamixer) at 90% and unmuted

the output of 'emerge -epv world | grep alsa' is as follows:
Quote:

[ebuild N ] media-libs/alsa-lib-0.9.2
[ebuild N ] media-sound/alsa-utils-0.9.2
[ebuild N ] media-sound/esound-0.2.29 +tcpd +alsa
[ebuild N ] media-libs/libmikmod-3.1.10 +oss +esd +alsa
[ebuild N ] media-libs/alsa-oss-0.9.1
[ebuild N ] media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.2
[ebuild N ] media-plugins/alsa-xmms-0.9.9b
[ebuild N ] media-video/ogle-0.8.5 +oss +mmx +alsa
[ebuild N ] media-sound/alsa-tools-0.9.1

Are there any more ideas?

Yes, but if you haven't always had the UDE flag set to alsa the applications don't magically get alsa support when you change the USE flag. You have to recompile the apps if you want to add alsa support after changing the flag. I don't think that's it though as xmms should work with that plug-in.

Have you tried outputting to /dev/dsp as it describes in the install guide?
