i might as well jump in and say how much i love xfce4 too. it has the best xinerama support of any wm in my opinion, it will not place a single window on the seam, it won't even put windows on the other screen at all if you don't want it to, which is great for me because my second monitor is my tv which i don't always want to have to flip to the input channel to grab windows that get away from me. plus its nice and fast and a great break from the box craze :]

using xinerama is also a nice way to hide that pesky panel, just send it to the other screen, out of sight, out of mind...but it would be nice to be able to turn it off..

Strangely I just switched back to using Gnome because Photoshop 7 running through Wine did odd stuff. Windows kept vanishing. A quick check on Google brought up another guy who was having similar problems with fluxbox. He also stated that when he ran it in X along without a window manager those problems went away.

I opened up KDE and Photoshop ran fine, same with Gnome. I found that the problem was with xfwm4 because using Metacity under xfce4 worked fine. I'm writing this for two reasons:

1. If you're having problems with the extra windows in Photoshop 7 + Wine then it's your WM.

2. If there's a solution I'd be glad to hear it.

I've had a few windows disappear on me, wine did twice, and xchat once. I haven't been able to reproduce the errors though. One thing that *seems* to be working is using the windows as managed or as a virtual desktop under the wine config (so the wm gets to put its border around them). I haven't had the problem since.

You asked for my ~/.xfce4/xinitrc, here are the changed lines
# xftaskbar4 &
gnome-panel &

Just make sure the script is executable (initially it won't be) and things get called before the panel part of xinitrc.

It's not in my practices to install a package that I don't want and don't need, use gentoo is also for this reason !

From my experience, Debian for example is more likely to fulfill this expectation, as the packages are a lot more fine-grained.

In my opinion, Gentoo lacks a two- or three-level dependency system. Debian provides "depends", "recommended" and "suggested". The use flags give a certain compensation for this, but it is a lot harder to build a system, which contains only the needed packages. (I'm not sure, if it is an inherent problem of the portage system or if the Debian packages are of higher quality.)

At the moment, I like Gentoo for the far more easier to maintain init-scripts, but the portage tools I know (emerge and qpkg so far) lack both power and speed of aptitude and I'm not sure if all this is worth the compilation overhead.

Anyone know a good program that will put icons on the desktop for xfce4? I have tried iDesk, but it does not want to load for me.
BTW, xfce4 does a great job with multiple monitors. kudos to the developers.

Ahhh... the reason this didn't work when I tried it originally way because I hadn't set the script to executable. The taskbar is gone... but the panel is still there. That's the part I want gone just because I think it's ugly and WAY prefer Gnome's. However, I get some sort of an OAF error when I load it up now. I'm sure it's because I'm running Gnome 2.3. Yay for development software.

For now I'll stick with Gnome on my desktop, however when my laptop gets here you can bet Xfce4 is going on it!

I'm really digging this whole "choice" thing.

I've never used iDesk but as I stated above, my problem was I forgot to make xinitrc executable in the ~/.xfce4/ directory. Try that and it might fix your problem.

Has anyone else had any luck adding their multimedia keys to the key bind themes? I can seem to get it to pick up the multimedia keys' binds.

Some ppl on the xfce4-dev list use rox to put icons on the desktop.

btw:
Rox can iirc even be used as session-manager (although the xfce4-session-manager is being developed and works quite well so far.
Just wait a bit for that one.)

i have started using xfce4 now... i like it, there are a few things i would like to see (like putting everything onto just one panel and using an application menu... i don't know if this would be considered bloat by most people, but i like have a "Start Menu" type thing...) i also miss the configurability i had with some other wm/de's i also dislike it assuming i use moz and requiring moz in order to load it's help browser...

The help browser looks for environment variable BROWSER and sets it to mozilla if it's not there. I just put export BROWSER=/usr/bin/dillo at the top of my .xinitrc to take care of that.

How configurable is the xfce panel? Can it be skined to look like something someone did with karamba?

Or
#emerge --inject samba
And then emerge it :).. though this leaves things a little funky :p.

Use a session manager , ie. GDM, KDE, entrance, etc.., I personally use entrance because all I want out of a session manager is eye candy, nothing else.

This is wonderful. I've been waiting for this for a while now and wow. Small, fast and, attactive.

However, how does one get rid of the error:
Code:

HOME not set.

would be pretty easy to make one.

make a copy of your config file for each window manager you want to use. say "config.kde" "config.gnome"

then make a small shell script that will give you a choice then cp the right one on top of the normal config file, then start x

or make one for each window manager that just as this in it

kdexstart
Quote:
cp -f /home/user/configfiles/kde.config /...xfree config file
startx

I know, not very specific but I'm at work and don't have access to my linux machine, so can't check the exact name of the file. this is an old trick I used in teh DOS days to get more save games in games that only allowed one ;-)

i had no qualms about doing this... but then i don't need samba for anything, so why should i care? for things that i do not necessarily want at the time, but might have use for later... well... i just don't use inject, there are other, more complicated ways of doing that :P

Wait till you see what's coming up...
Like the (neat) session-manager, several panel-plugins like (on my laptop) system-load and battery-status...
It's my de of choice for about a 3/4 year now and I'm more impressed each day...

It is a complete desktop environment with an included file manager (which can also handle SMB-connections on-the-fly) and a lot of good tools that you might know from KDE or Gnome.

is there a way to get only xfce4 without the rest?

that is odd... it didn't try to upgrade all that stuff on me... and xfce4 itself is indeed a VERY fast emerge... what kind of options do you have in make.conf?

# due to gcc's optimizations interacting in a strange way. Please test the
# package (and in some cases the libraries it uses) at default optimizations
# before reporting errors to developers.
#
# -mcpu=<cpu-type> means optimize code for the particular type of CPU without
# breaking compatibility with other CPUs.
#
# -march=<cpu-type> means to take full advantage of the ABI and instructions
# for the particular CPU; this will break compatibility with older CPUs (for
# example, -march=athlon-xp code will not run on a regular Athlon, and
# -march=i686 code will not run on a Pentium Classic.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-3.2 and higher: athlon-xp, athlon-mp,
# athlon-tbird, athlon, k6, k6-2, k6-3, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (PentiumPro), pentium, pentium-mmx, pentiumpro, pentium2 (Celeron), pentium3.
# Note that Gentoo Linux 1.4 and higher include at least gcc-3.2.
# ATHLON-4 will generate invalid SSE instructions; use 'athlon' instead.
# PENTIUM4 will generate invalid instructions; use 'pentium3' instead.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-2.95*: k6, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (Pentium Pro), pentium, pentiumpro Gentoo Linux 1.2 and below use gcc-2.95*
#
# Decent examples:
#
CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
#CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe"

# If you set a CFLAGS above, then this line will set your default C++ flags to
# the same settings. If you don't set CFLAGS above, then comment this line out.
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

# Advanced Masking
# ================
#
# Gentoo is using a new masking system to allow for easier stability testing
# on packages. KEYWORDS are used in ebuilds to mask and unmask packages based
# on the platform they are set for. A special form has been added that
# indicates packages and revisions that are expected to work, but have not yet
# been approved for the stable set. '~arch' is a superset of 'arch' which
# includes the unstable, in testing, packages. Users of the 'x86' architecture
# would add '~x86' to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to enable unstable/testing packages.
# '~ppc', '~sparc', '~sparc64' are the unstable KEYWORDS for their respective
# platforms. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT YOUR SPECIFIC ~ARCHITECTURE IN THE LIST.
# IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR ARCH, OR THE IMPLICATIONS, DO NOT MODIFY THIS.
#
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

# Portage Directories
# ===================
#
# Each of these settings controls an aspect of portage's storage and file
# system usage. If you change any of these, be sure it is available when
# you try to use portage. *** DO NOT INCLUDE A TRAILING "/" ***
#
# PORTAGE_TMPDIR is the location portage will use for compilations and
#     temporary storage of data. This can get VERY large depending upon
#     the application being installed.
#PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp
#
# PORTDIR is the location of the portage tree. This is the repository
#     for all profile information as well as all ebuilds. This directory
#     itself can reach 200M. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND that you change this.
#PORTDIR=/usr/portage
#
# DISTDIR is where all of the source code tarballs will be placed for
#     emerges. The source code is maintained here unless you delete
#     it. The entire repository of tarballs for gentoo is 9G. This is
#     considerably more than any user will ever download. 2-3G is
#     a large DISTDIR.
#DISTDIR=${PORTDIR}/distfiles
#
# PKGDIR is the location of binary packages that you can have created
#     with '--buildpkg' or '-b' while emerging a package. This can get
#     upto several hundred megs, or even a few gigs.
#PKGDIR=${PORTDIR}/packages
#
# PORT_LOGDIR is the location where portage will store all the logs it
#     creates from each individual merge. They are stored as YYMMDD-$PF.log
#     in the directory specified. This is disabled until you enable it by
#     providing a directory. Permissions will be modified as needed.
#PORT_LOGDIR=/var/log/emerge
#
# PORTDIR_OVERLAY is a directory where local ebuilds may be stored without
#     concern that they will be deleted by rsync updates. Default is not
#     defined.
##PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/ebuilds

# Fetching files
# ==============
#
# If you need to set a proxy for wget or lukemftp, add the appropriate "export
# ftp_proxy=<proxy>" and "export http_proxy=<proxy>" lines to /etc/profile if
# all users on your system should use them.
#
# Portage uses wget by default. Here are some settings for some alternate
# downloaders -- note that you need to merge these programs first before they
# will be available.
#
# Default fetch command (5 tries, passive ftp for firewall compatibility)
#FETCHCOMMAND="/usr/bin/wget -t 5 --passive-ftp \${URI} -P \${DISTDIR}"
#RESUMECOMMAND="/usr/bin/wget -c -t 5 --passive-ftp \${URI} -P \${DISTDIR}"
#
# Using wget, ratelimiting downloads
#FETCHCOMMAND="/usr/bin/wget -t 5 --passive-ftp --limit-rate=200k \${URI} -P \${DISTDIR}"
#RESUMECOMMAND="/usr/bin/wget -c -t 5 --passive-ftp --limit-rate=200k \${URI} -P \${DISTDIR}"
#
# Lukemftp (BSD ftp):
#FETCHCOMMAND="/usr/bin/lukemftp -s -a -o \${DISTDIR}/\${FILE} \${URI}"
#RESUMECOMMAND="/usr/bin/lukemftp -s -a -R -o \${DISTDIR}/\${FILE} \${URI}"
#
# Prozilla (turbo downloader)
#FETCHCOMMAND='/usr/bin/proz --no-getch -s ${URI} -P ${DISTDIR}'
#
# Portage uses GENTOO_MIRRORS to specify mirrors to use for source retrieval.
# The list is a space seperated list which is read left to right. If you use
# another mirror we highly recommend leaving the default mirror at the end of
# the list so that portage will fall back to it if the files cannot be found
# on your specified mirror. We _HIGHLY_ recommend that you change this setting
# to a nearby mirror by merging and using the 'mirrorselect' tool.
#GENTOO_MIRRORS="<your_mirror_here> http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/ http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"

# Advanced Features
# =================
#
# MAKEOPTS provides extra options that may be passed to 'make' when a
#     program is compiled. Presently the only use is for specifying
#     the number of parallel makes (-j) to perform. The suggested number
#     for parallel makes is CPUs+1.
#MAKEOPTS="-j2"
#
# AUTOCLEAN enables portage to automatically clean out older or overlapping
#     packages from the system after every successful merge. This is the
#     same as running 'emerge -c' after every merge. Set with: "yes" or "no".
#     This does not affect the unpacked source. See 'noclean' below.
AUTOCLEAN="yes"
#
# FEATURES are settings that affect the functionality of portage. Most of
#     these settings are for developer use, but some are available to non-
#     developers as well. 'buildpkg' is an always-on setting for the emerge
#     flag of the same name. It causes binary packages to be created of all
#     packages that are merged. 'distcc' enables distcc support for via CC.
#     'userpriv' allows portage to drop root privleges while it is compiling
#     as a security measure, and as a side effect this can remove sandbox
#     access violations for users. 'usersandbox' enables sandboxing while
#     portage is running under userpriv. 'noclean' prevents portage from
#     removing the source and temporary files after a merge -- for debugging
#     purposes only. 'noauto' is a feature which causes ebuild to perform
#     the action requested and not any other required actions like clean or
#     unpack -- for debugging purposes only. 'cvs' is a feature for developers
#     that causes portage to enable full settings and USE flags in SRC_URI and
#     has wide effects -- don't set this unless you're ready for it. 'keeptemp'
#     prevents the clean phase from deleting the temp files ($T) from a merge.
#FEATURES="sandbox buildpkg ccache distcc userpriv usersandbox noclean noauto cvs keeptemp"
#
# CCACHE_SIZE sets the space use limitations for ccache. The default size is
#     2G, and will be set if not defined otherwise and ccache is in features.
#     Portage will set the default ccache dir if it is not present in the
#     user's environment: ${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/ccache (/var/tmp/ccache).
#     Sizes are specified with 'G' 'M' or 'K'.
#     '4G' for 4 gigabytes, '4096M' for 4 gigabytes, etc... Default is 2G
#CCACHE_SIZE="2G"
#
# RSYNC_RETRIES sets the number of times portage will attempt to retrieve
#     a current portage tree before it exits with an error. This allows
#     for a more successful retrieval without user intervention most times.
#RSYNC_RETRIES="3"
#
# RSYNC_TIMEOUT sets the length of time rsync will wait before it times out
#     on a connection. Most users will benefit from this setting as it will
#     reduce the amount of 'dead air' they experience when they run across
#     the occasional, unreachable mirror. Dialup users might want to set this
#     value up around the 300 second mark.
#RSYNC_TIMEOUT=180
#
# RSYNC_EXCLUDEFROM is a file that portage will pass to rsync when it updates
#     the portage tree. Specific chucks of the tree may be excluded from
#     consideration. This may cause dependency failures if you are not careful.
#     The file format is one pattern per line, blanks and ';' or '#' lines are
#     comments. See 'man rsync' for more details on the exclude-from format.
#RSYNC_EXCLUDEFROM=/etc/portage/rsync_excludes

Code:
 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge /usr/portage/x11-wm/xfce4/xfce4-3.91.0.ebuild -upv

Wouldn't the fact that you used the -u option while in ~x86 make portage attempt to upgrade EVERYTHING that xfce4 depends on?

Try just ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"&&emerge [-p] xfce4

That was the commandline I ran and it was done fairly quickly, if memory serves.
