Maybe this should into the gentoo-chat forum, but I'll post it in here...

For all those who think fluxbox is too minimalistic and Gnome/KDE are to huge:

Give Xfce a shot!

I tried the xfce4-3.91.0.ebuild yesterday and I was very impressed.

emerge it by doing:

Code:
bash $ ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge /usr/portage/x11-wm/xfce4/xfce4-3.91.0.ebuild

It is a complete desktop environment with an included file manager (which can also handle SMB-connections on-the-fly) and a lot of good tools that you might know from KDE or Gnome.

Yes, your are right. XFCE is great. But I believe one post is enough.
( Of course I believe this to be a "link" problem)

It's great, though I don't really like xffm. :)

I was really impressed with new version. My one real complaint though is the panel. I would definatly consider switching to it full time if I could turn that damn thing off.

I've been using Xfce for a bit and I have to agree with kernja... I wish there was a way to kill the panel. I've grown to like it after customizing it, but the ability to turn it off can't hurt.

The built in file manager is pretty weak too. The way it handles Samba is nice but the interface is dreadful.

Is there some way to give Xfce a "desktop" with icons and such? I suppose I could run Nautilaus but that would kind of defeat the purpose of using Xfce.

Same, wish there was a option to disable it.

I just started using XFce4 on my laptop. I would be using it on my desktop too, except that my desktop is set up using multiple monitors with nvidias twinview, and XFce4 doesn't really do well with multiple monitors. At least not as well as gnome does.

I completly agree with you there. The best thing about the file manager is how easily it handles samba. I really with there was an option aside from the tree view though...maybe a standard icon, non tree view would be better

There's no option to disable the panel, but it's just a app.

You could edit it out of one of the initalization files it uses. Can't remember it's name(maybe someone else does) but it's possible.

To remove the taskpanel.
Edit /etc/xfce4/xinitrc by simply remove or comment the line that has xftaskbar4& on it, its on line 37.

This should disable that top panel from loading.
Havent tried it yet, cant get out X for now and to lazy to open a new X session ;)

This removes the taskbar panel which I actually use. What I'm looking for is a way to remove the main panel. I tried editing out some lines below the ones you mentioned because they also seemed related to the panel, but all my tinkering just resulted in X not starting

That's just because everything else is started in the background (with an & after it).
So X starts, starts a few apps in the background and quits again.
Just choose an ap not to go into the background an start it as the last one.
When you exit that app, X quits.

It has been a long while since I used xfce4 but I do remember there being a way to turn off the panel.

As a previous poster stated you could try editing the ~/.xfce4/xinitrc file.

that should work

There is also an option to autohide the panel when you are not using it.

Cheers!

I finally put a little time into XFCE4 to see if I liked it enough to switch to it... and that's a definite no. It's pretty (blends in nicely with most other apps I use, since they're all GTK2), and lightweight, fast, etc., but just can't compete with the feel (for me, personally) of Windowmaker. So, I'm back to Windowmaker and Rox to wait oh-so-patiently for the next WM release that's supposed to include anti-aliased fonts. :)

(yes, I know I could use rox with xfce...)

This is a little off topic but for those of us freaks who are still playing with 1,000,000 different desktop environments and window managers, is there a nice little script someone could post that would, say, let me pick my environment after typing something similar to startx? I'm kinda sick of having to edit a file every time I wanna switch out.

I would to give a shot to XFCE4, but there is a dependancy that I don't want.... SAMBA =>
Code:
localdomain root # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -p xfce4

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N   ] x11-libs/libxfce4util-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-libs/libxfcegui4-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-libs/libxfce4mcs-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce-mcs-manager-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce4-iconbox-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-wm/xfwm4-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] gnome-extra/libgsf-1.8.1
[ebuild  N   ] gnome-base/librsvg-2.2.5
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce4-panel-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce4-systray-0.1
[ebuild  N   ] app-text/psutils-1.17
[ebuild  N   ] app-text/a2ps-4.13b-r4
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfprint-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfdesktop-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce-utils-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] net-fs/samba-2.2.8a
[ebuild  N   ] dev-libs/dbh-1.0.14
[ebuild  N   ] app-misc/xffm-3.91.410
[ebuild  N   ] x11-misc/xfce-mcs-plugins-3.91.0
[ebuild  N   ] x11-wm/xfce4-3.91.0

I'm ok to install all this stuff, but why there is this *$!§£* dependancy in xffm ???

I upgraded to 3.91.0 yesterday from 0.3.90.0, but yet TODAY, I see this when I do an emerge -up --deep world:

Code:

[ebuild    UD] x11-libs/libxfce4util-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-libs/libxfcegui4-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-libs/libxfce4mcs-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfce-mcs-manager-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfprint-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfce4-iconbox-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce-2.1.1 [2.1.1-r1]
[ebuild    UD] x11-wm/xfwm4-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfce-utils-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] app-misc/xffm-3.90.381 [3.91.410]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfce4-panel-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfce-mcs-plugins-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-misc/xfdesktop-3.90.0 [3.91.0]
[ebuild    UD] x11-wm/xfce4-3.90.0 [3.91.0]

Why does portage do this to me so often? Why is there only 3.90.0 now? :(

Well, xffm has Samba navigation built in... Why are you so against having it installed? It won't add the daemon to startup by installing it?

It may be though that Samba isn't needed... I really don't know. I had Samba before... Try removing the dependancy from the ebuild and trying to compile it without. ;) If that works, xffm's ebuild should look at the USE var for samba and configure accordingly instead.

I think the solution to this is:
Code:
emerge -Up world

-U should make portage not downgrade anything

It's not in my practices to install a package that I don't want and don't need, use gentoo is also for this reason ! So now xfce4 wants samba, maybe tomorrow it will be NFS, OpenAFS.... I only have 1 PC so I don't need samba !

I think I will install xfce4-3.90.0 instead of xfce4-3.91.0 because xfce4-3.90.0 doesn't need samba.

Is there a big difference between xfce4-3.90.0 and xfce4-3.91.0 ?

Just remove the xffm dependency in the xfce4 ebuild.
It isn't really required, I know that because I removed it too and xfce4 will still work properly.

Ok, I have try version 3.90.0 for the moment, I will remove xffm dependancy (I don't use it, prefer rxvt :) ) and try 3.91.0 next time.
Thx for the tips !

i just did
nano /etc/xfce4/xinitrc

change line 36 to

exec xfdesktop

and change line 39 to
#$panel

this works for me (i use startxfce4 instead of startx) but you might need to edit /home/xfce4/xinitrc if it exists (doesnt on mine)

cake.

I have to second the vote for xfce4... People really need to give it a shot, especially if you're using gnome or like gtk2 :)

http://www.ruinedsoft.com/screen.png

And using the gnome panel instead of the xfce version works nicely (just edit ~/.xfce4/xinitrc) ...

Could you post a copy of that? I tried replacing the xfce panel with gnome's to no avail.

DuF, you could try merging it with the option USE="-samba" emerge ...

it's just an idea ;)
