Maybe this should into the gentoo-chat forum, but I'll post it in here...

For all those who think fluxbox is too minimalistic and Gnome/KDE are to huge:

Give Xfce a shot!

I tried the xfce4-3.91.0.ebuild yesterday and I was very impressed.

emerge it by doing:

I was really impressed with new version. My one real complaint though is the panel. I would definatly consider switching to it full time if I could turn that damn thing off.

I've been using Xfce for a bit and I have to agree with kernja... I wish there was a way to kill the panel. I've grown to like it after customizing it, but the ability to turn it off can't hurt.

The built in file manager is pretty weak too. The way it handles Samba is nice but the interface is dreadful.

Is there some way to give Xfce a "desktop" with icons and such? I suppose I could run Nautilaus but that would kind of defeat the purpose of using Xfce.

I just started using XFce4 on my laptop. I would be using it on my desktop too, except that my desktop is set up using multiple monitors with nvidias twinview, and XFce4 doesn't really do well with multiple monitors. At least not as well as gnome does.

There's no option to disable the panel, but it's just a app.

You could edit it out of one of the initalization files it uses. Can't remember it's name(maybe someone else does) but it's possible.

To remove the taskpanel.
Edit /etc/xfce4/xinitrc by simply remove or comment the line that has xftaskbar4& on it, its on line 37.

This should disable that top panel from loading.
Havent tried it yet, cant get out X for now and to lazy to open a new X session

That's just because everything else is started in the background (with an & after it).
So X starts, starts a few apps in the background and quits again.
Just choose an ap not to go into the background an start it as the last one.
When you exit that app, X quits.

It has been a long while since I used xfce4 but I do remember there being a way to turn off the panel.

As a previous poster stated you could try editing the ~/.xfce4/xinitrc file.

that should work

There is also an option to autohide the panel when you are not using it.

I finally put a little time into XFCE4 to see if I liked it enough to switch to it... and that's a definite no. It's pretty (blends in nicely with most other apps I use, since they're all GTK2), and lightweight, fast, etc., but just can't compete with the feel (for me, personally) of Windowmaker. So, I'm back to Windowmaker and Rox to wait oh-so-patiently for the next WM release that's supposed to include anti-aliased fonts.

(yes, I know I could use rox with xfce...)

This is a little off topic but for those of us freaks who are still playing with 1,000,000 different desktop environments and window managers, is there a nice little script someone could post that would, say, let me pick my environment after typing something similar to startx? I'm kinda sick of having to edit a file every time I wanna switch out.

Just remove the xffm dependency in the xfce4 ebuild.
It isn't really required, I know that because I removed it too and xfce4 will still work properly.

Ok, I have try version 3.90.0 for the moment, I will remove xffm dependancy (I don't use it, prefer rxvt

) and try 3.91.0 next time.

i just did
nano /etc/xfce4/xinitrc

change line 36 to

exec xfdesktop

and change line 39 to
#$panel

this works for me (i use startxfce4 instead of startx) but you might need to edit /home/xfce4/xinitrc if it exists (doesnt on mine)

I have to second the vote for xfce4... People really need to give it a shot, especially if you're using gnome or like gtk2
