Hello,

I wanted to give KDE 4 a try and installed it over my PC. I installed what I thought was the bare-minimum to get a desktop but without success. Here is what I did:

emerge -va kdebase-startkde-3.97.0

No errors showed up, everything seems to have installed properly, after rebooting I got greated with KDM prompt and when entering my password I saw the little window with 5-6 icons and when it disappeared I got a blue desktop without any start menu or panel.

I would like to get some help in figuring out why the new panel (Plasma I think) is not appearing on my installation. I am replying fast and ready to retrieve any info you may required (other than my credit card ;-)

I think kdebase-meta, kde-workspace-meta and kde-runtime-meta are necessary for the basic system.
To check, if it's a problem with your graphics driver, follow the instructions at http://websvn.kde.org/*checkout*/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/kwin/COMPOSITE_HOWTO

I unmerged the 3.97.0 stuff, I then got back my working KDE 3.5. I reattempted to install kde 4 but this time first updating my KDE 3.5 to latest (3.5.8) by unmasking and emerge kdebase-startkde-3.5.7-r1.

Once that was done, I installed the 3.97.0 ebuilds and then modified /etc/init.d/xdm to start /usr/kde/3.9/bin/kdm when I set kde4 as the DISPLAYMANAGER inside /etc/rc.conf and everything went well.

KDE 4 seems quite nice.
