well, it's ..... plain ..... ;)
it's actually just something to get you going, it's not meant to be pretty right from the start... it's meant to be working right from the start (no bad jokes about that please  )

Hi Aner.

X is really just a program that allows graphics to be displayed on your screen. It also relies on a program called a window-manager to determine how X looks and interacts with you and your programs.

After installing X the default window manager used is a very small and simple window-manager called twn. If you want X to look much more beautiful then you need to choose another window-manager. Have a look at this webpage for a list.

There are also complete desktop environments (window-manager + integrated utilities) that offer an even more complete user interface. The biggest ones are kde and gnome. These can take a very long time to emerge. :)

Gentoo has a really good guide to setting up your desktop here.

Ciao, Brandy

Sounds like you started up X and it went with the default TWM (which is quite ugly). After you pick a better WM (Fluxbox or Window Maker are good and there are plenty of threads on this topic) you can start that window maker by putting
Code:
exec <wm name>
into ~/.xinitrc and then that file will be executed when you run "startx".

From the guide:

Generally, the first thing to do after installing X is to install a nice window manager. Of course, you can stick to tvm if you want a really ugly, I mean functional, window manager.
