Why, when I emerge xfree, does it want to download exe files? isnt exe a Windows format? or how does that work? _________________ "Another one bites the dust"

Does the file have .exe suffix or did you use the file command to recognize the file as a windows executable?
If the file only had exe suffix it probably meant something different than windows executable. _________________ Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the

xrn0id,
The .exes it downloads are part of MS web fonts that they made available for free download. Of course, because they originate from MS they are executables, and they aren't GPLed so they can't be changed to another more 'linuxy' format.

o alright, thats cool. I originally though that linux downloaded, and ripped the MS right out of them, and turned them into linux usable fonts. _________________ "Another one bites the dust"

This exe files are almost certainly self-extracting archives. Linux can not execute these files, but as the compression format is known, it can decompress the attached archive. |

They ARE self-extracting cabs. CAB is a compression format used (only?) by microsoft (if you haven't destroyed your windows CDROM mount and browse it for the fun of it all). In fact, one of the dependencies for Xfree if you have TrueType enabled is:
Code: |
app-arch/cabextract
Latest version available: 0.6
Latest version installed: 0.6
Size of downloaded files: 90 kB
Homepage: http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/cabextract.php3
Description: Extracts files from Microsoft .cab files
