Mplayer problem

i'm not sure why it started going this, but now whenever i try to watch something on mplayer it either plays the video at something like half speed with full speed audio, or it plays the first frame of the video (leaves it displayed like it's a picture) and continues playing audio. I'm using the ati-drivers (i've tried both 3.2.8 and 3.7.0) for my 9800, and using mplayer with the -vo sdl option as it's the only one that seems to work properly. any ideas?

does -vo xv work for the video? Thats what I'm using with a 9700 in fluxbox, xfce4 and kde. Can't remember what I use for sound, but its probably the oss option (as I use ALSA)
