I pulled out my old laptop, and I figured it'd make a GREAT Gentoo machine.

I can get everything else working on it fine, except I am not very good with wireless cards. This has worked under Ubuntu 7.04 at one time [and I really do hate it, I just didn't know how to recompile a kernel at that time =/], I do not know the kernel version of it as a fdisk'd that a long time ago. What would be the best kernel version to try to get this card to work? I'd rather use the newest kernel that supports it. I know in 2.6.21.* the kernel went haywire with wireless drivers, but I don't use one so I don't know how it is in 2.6.23*, and if it'd bother supporting such an old card.

Thanks in advance for the help ^_^

the latest kernel?

The driver for your card is found in the prism54 driver (AFAIK), which is in portage. Or, try ndiswrapper if all else fails.

The most recent. :D What's the specs on the laptop?

Also, if it's a CardBus card, you have to emerge pcmcia, pcmciautils, and prism54.

It's in 2.6.23.*? I'm sorry, I didn't think it was. Sorry for asking such a stupid question =/

It's a Compaq Evo n610c. a pentimum-m 2GHZ with 768MB of RAM. Using an Intel 82845 chipset.

It's old, but it's better than my other laptop.

And thanks for the help, I'll get it running soon ^_^

The driver is not (AFAIK) in the kernel (yet, or at all). Just use the latest kernel and emerg prism54 for the wireless driver.

*grin* Define "old". I've got Gentoo on an old Digital P166MMX laptop with 80MB of RAM. Runs decent, actually.

I've got RedHat (3.0.3) on a 486...

That laptop isn't too old - I wouldn't mind having it :D

I'm looking into sticking Gentoo on an old 486DX2/66 w/64MB of RAM, but doing a stage1 build from it would take months.

I would DEFINITELY reccomend against gentoo on that old a box - unless you do serious distcc (and/or build it on a different box altogether).

I has slackware on there for a while... it was nice, but I wanted to go for the nostalgia ;)

Downsides to that old a redhat: No dhcp, no ssh, can't build new software.
Upsides: X, Mosaic/Arena, xboing, flying, xlander, etc.

If you want the redhat iso, I can send it to you, then I can email you instructions (if you'd like) :D

[/OT] :D
