I'm trying to get my sound working correctly, but i'm not sure what sound card i have. is there a way to find this out? I'm installing alsa, following the directions in the desktop manual...it says enable the soundcore module, which i've scoured the kernel for, but have been unable to find. where exactly is this and is it called "soundcore"? the desktop guide says to add a module to the /etc/modules.autoload is this module supposed to be compiled by the kernel? then why is it that i've seen in this forum that only soundcore is need in the kernel to run alsa? |

You need only to compile in soundcard support into the kernel to use alsa. You need NOT compile support for specific sound cards. To find out what kind of sound card you have you can try typing:
Which can somtimes give you enough information to work with. Is your soundcard onboard or is it a PCI card? If it is onboard what brand of motherboard is it, or what chipset does it utilize? The chipset information should be provided in the information that you can get from running less /proc/pci
Post what you find and we can do more.
Good luck!!!
