Hi everyone
I have a French keyboard and getting it to work is more important than anything else. I opened /etc/rc.conf to modify the KEYMAP value. A comment above the value said to look for keymaps in /usr/share/keymap.
My problem is that there is no such file! Just to make things worse if I reload "/etc/init.d/keymap restart" without changing the KEYMAP (default is "us") I get a "failed" message [!!]
I'm using the LiveCD 1.4RC4 with the 3 stages. The only way I've found to go around that problem is to load sshd and do everything remotely, which hardly solves anything. It's yet the only thing keeping me from installing gentoo on my duron 700, 440MB of ram.
BTW does anyone have any clue to how long it might take to build a stage 1 on this? Thanks for any help.

The keymaps should be located in /usr/share/keymaps/ (notice the s in keymaps)
The French keymaps should be located in /usr/share/keymaps/i386/azerty/
Take a quick look at this guide for setting up your keyboard.
If for some very strange reason you do not have a /usr/share/keymaps/ directory then you need to emerge sys-apps/kbd

I had already checked with and without the "s" but the directory just isn't there. I filled a "minor" bug report in the documentation section of bugzilla because it does seem like this should be in the LiveCD.
I tried the emerge sys-apps/kbd but it seems emerge only appears once bootstrapping is finished, which I haven't even started due to the keyboard problem. It's a vicious circle!!!
Installing over ssh seems like the only solution.
If anyone has any ideas, I'm up for grabs!

Sorry, remi2402. By talking about rc.conf I assumed you were up to chapter22 of the installation.
If you are just starting your installation, then you can quite easily select a keymap for your French keyboard. When booting the LiveCD you can specify extra options at the boot: prompt. ([F2] gives a list of these options.) To enable keymap selection:
Code: |
boot: gentoo dokeymap
|
After the kernel is loaded a menu will appear where you can select the keymap.

Thanks for your answer. Things just got a lot brighter!
I did file that enhancement report to make it slightly more obvious to careless readers like myself.
