i used to have ALL my usb devices working properly with gentoo. i made the huge mistake of not backing up my .config file and did a make mrproper. yep... all gone. anyway, i almost got it all back.
my asus a7v333 motherboard has two sets usb inputs in the back. if i plug anything to the top set, when I execut lsusb, I can see the device recognized. However, if I plug it in the bottom set, it does not show.
note that all sets of inputs were working before I made my huge mistake of not backing up my .config file. any suggestiongs what might be wrong? i have not touched my hardware at all. Am I missing some module?
Thanks for your time.

According to the product page here You have USB support for 1.1 devices as integrated into your southbridge chip, which I would put money on being the ones that are already working OK. Also in addition to those ports you also have another VIA USB controller to add USB 2.0 ports to the system (it says 4-ports for USB 2.0, then later it specifies that on the back panel 2 are 2.0 and 2 are 1.1 -- the "missing" other 2 2.0 ports are likely only accessed via an internal header.) So armed with that information you just need to look for USB 2.0 specific settings in your kernel for the "VIA VT6202 USB2.0 controller"
Hope that helps!

what you mean by "USB 2.0 specific settings in your kernel for the VIA VT6202 USB2.0 controller" is it compiling usb 2.0 support for it?
thew only thing I saw in menuconfig is
EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support (EXPERIMENTAL)
in regards to the Via chipset, I am currently using:
UHCI (Intel PIIX4, VIA, ...) support
thanks again,

so yes... compiling EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support (EXPERIMENTAL) into the kernel fixed my problem.
the interetsing thing is that i loaded it once, and all my devices appeared once i ran lsusb. i rebooted, without loading ehci, and ALL devices are still recognized.
anyway, BonezTheGoon thanks a lot for your help!!! you pointed me in the right direction.
