800x600 or 1024x768 shell... is it possible?

I would like to see more of the messages without having to shft+PgUp all the time. Is there any way to increase the base resolution.

Yes!

Compile your kernel with the following options:

Console drivers:
[*] VGA text console
[*] Video mode selection support

Then add the following kernel options to your lilo.conf (or your grub config file):

video=vesa:1024x768


[OFFTOPIC]
(Select these kernel options too if you want a background image for your console
[*] VESA VGA graphics console
[*] Use splash screen instead of boot logo

Then:
> emerge bootsplash
