I just wanted to check before I take the plunge into the Gentoo sea, are there any USB key compatible downloads available? I don't have a CDROM in the system, and am looking to turn the computer into something more than a paperweight. |

Dr, GREAT Idea. I don't see a reason for it not to work. I bet you could easily mount the cd image in a directory using mount -o loop gentooimage.iso some/directory, copy the files, directory structure and permissions, to the usbkey and then use syslinux to point to the kernel on the usbkey. boot the key and go. I did it with PCOS and it worked good.
Give it a try, or if you need help, let me / us know.
Oh, welcome to the forums and hopefully, Gentoo _________________ Mark

Thanks, bhagany, for the link. I should have searched the wealth of Gentoo documentation before I answered. I did't follow my own advice.
I would however point out 2 things.
[*]The documentation uses a cd. You can use the iso image itself, saving burning a cd. (trivia difference)
[*]The documentation is for a Gentoo Live cd. If you want to install, I would suggest using a minimal install cd and follow the install handbook (important difference)
As always, should any of your agents get caught or killed, just let us know and help is available. _________________ Mark

Following the Handbook, i.e. not use any of the installers on the LiveCD is a good piece of advice indeed, but the medium you boot from is irrelevant, use Gentoo's minimal CD or LiveCD, or any other CD like the latest Hardy Heron or the nifty SystemRescueCd, or anything else you like...
