I've got xmms running on my Gentoo Athlon 2200+ but when I tell it to play a folder it takes up to 3 minutes before it will start playing. That doesn't seem normal to me.. anybody know where I should begin to troubleshoot this?

What messages does it give you when you launch it from a shell prompt?

This used to happen to me when I was running kde (arts) and trying to use xmms with alsa. Xmms would just sit there waiting for arts to time out so that it could gain control of /dev/dsp.

Workaround 1:
Try emerging the xmms-arts (ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86") and using that plugin if you are using KDE.

Workaround 2:
Set arts to time out after only a few seconds from the sound section of the kcontrol pannel.

Workaround 3:
Gimme a bunch of money and I'll come out there and see if I can fix it for you :-P.

Most of all, have fun!

Better yet, if arts does turn out to be the problem, turn it off alltogether and use oss or alsa.

Of course, if the folder is HUGE(and I mean huge), it could be the filesystem having some trouble, so if there are tens of thousands of mp3s in there, you might want to consider reiserfs which much better handles a lot of files in a folder.

But like someone else said, the most likely cause is the system waiting for a timeout. Is there any dubious activity on the IDE led?
