I have an Athlon XP 1.6 Ghz and am not sure if I should go with the rc2 or rc4 with no Athlon optimizations.
Recommendations? |

I don't get it. Why can't you have rc4 with Athlon optmizations? (I suppose you mean Gentoo Release 1.4rc4).

Install from stage1 if you want a fully optimized system.
The version of the LiveCD you use does not matter, you can even install from a KNOPPIX CD. |

start from stage1, you'll get optimizations regardless
