I am trying to enable SPDIF (optical) from my on board sound card but I can't figure out how to go about enabling it. I have a Abit KN8 SLI motherboard with a Nforce 4 SLI chipset running ALSA.

Right now I am getting audio through the analog jacks fine but I want to switch to SPDIF. When I connect my Logitech z-680 5.1 speaker set to the SPDIF port the Display on the control panel of the speakers say " Input: Optical No Digital Data". But I am able to get SPDIF working in windows XP.

Try [url]http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dolby_Digital_Out_(AC3,_SPDIF)[/url]. I've had luck running 5.1 sound via mplayer over spdif using this. Haven't been able to make it work in mythtv yet, or set it as the default output (put much effort into this yet however).
EDIT: not sure why that url isn't showing up. |

OK just tried that and now my reciever is detecting that the SPDIF is working but no sound is comming out and now the analog sound put isn't working either. I've already tried un muting and turning up the sound to max in alsamixer (at least I think I did).
p.s.
The reason why your link isn't showing properly probably has to do with the fact that your link has special chars in it. |

| OK figured it out. After you follow the instructions in that post you need to set the IEC958 Playback source as Analog In in alsamixer. |
