When I first ran Pidgin it ran correctly and I had a conversation with somebody using it.
If I then shut it down (cleanly, via the WM close button) and re-start it, it just hangs, that it, ps -ef shows it but the buddies dialog never appears.
If I rm -r ~/.purple and try again, Pidgin now works and once I've set up my account I can converse again. So it seems that something in the .purple directory is causing a problem. Is it just me ?

have you enabled system tray in pidgin's preferences?
in that case closing the buddy list via wm won't close the application. |
