Pidgin doesn't start the second time around [SOLVED]

When I first ran Pidgin it ran correctly and I had a conversation with somebody using it.

If I then shut it down (cleanly, via the WM close button) and re-start it, it just hangs, that it, ps -ef shows it but the buddies dialog never appears.

If I rm -r ~/.purple and try again, Pidgin now works and once I've set up my account I can converse again. So it seems that something in the .purple directory is causing a problem. Is it just me ?

does finch do it too? (the CLI portion of pidgin)

have you enabled system tray in pidgin's preferences?
in that case closing the buddy list via wm won't close the application.
